Meet Josh

One of the most important parts of Hart’s is our people – we think they’re pretty nifty folks. Hopefully you’ll get to know and love them as much as we have in the coming months as we share their stories.

This week, we want to introduce Josh – a barrista-cashier and hip hop artist. Ishmael Raps is his artistic pseudonym.

josh 2Josh has been creating music since he was 12 years old when he started writing rap with his friends in music class. Growing up on the west side of Rochester he attended the School of the Arts and graduated a vocal major. He has since been performing at venues around Rochester including Water Street Music Hall, the Bug Jar, and the Main Street Armory – when he isn’t traveling for gigs.

His next show is coming up on October 24th in Chicago.

Part of his mission has been spreading the word about Rochester in other cities, but says, “Working at Hart’s has felt like I’ve been a part of the growth of Rochester. Getting to know the community and seeing the community celebrate what’s local has been gratifying.”

josh 3You can’t really miss Josh around the store. He always dresses for effect and his face quickly goes from intense to comical in an instant – a flitting trick that makes you grin contagiously. When asked about his style he says, “Being different is important. I have always tried to stand out – fashion is important!”

Josh found Hart’s because he works at the Little as well. We asked him what his favorite item was in the store, and he knew immediately.

“E.L. Fudge – Got them a lot when I was a kid, and hadn’t had them in a while. When I first saw them here at Hart’s I was like “WOW!” and I ate a whole box of them on the spot – so now I think I have fed my habit and I can sleep another night.”
